The Association of Volunteer Social Service Macao (AVSM) was founded in 1986. Its establishment can be traced back to the Secretariat for Social Welfare (now: Social Welfare Bureau). In early 1986, the Secretariat for Social Welfare organized a six-month Volunteer Leadership Training Program. Its goal was to train 24 volunteers from 14 different social service associations in Macau, so that they could help enhance the development of volunteer work in the local community.
Besides a lot of useful knowledge and skills, the training program also offered the 24 volunteers a chance to understand the volunteer work situation in Macau at that time, to reflect and to share volunteering experiences. In their discussion, they realized that the resources of society had not been fully or efficiently utilized. They reached the conclusion that there was the need for a bridging association, to enhance the communication between different organizations, to unite volunteers, to raise the public awareness and promote the development of volunteer work. After months of hard work and deliberation, AVSM was founded on 18th July 1986, and officially registered on 14th August 1987.
However, the road of AVSM had not been a smooth one. In its early days, the office of AVSM was set up in an apartment provided by a relative of one of the members. Later on, the apartment was acquired by an estate developer, which resulted in the contact address of AVSM being a mere mail box for a great number of years. In 1993, with the help of the government, AVSM could finally settle in an office in the Auditório Centro de Juventude, and a year later, with the completion of the Community Centre Iao Hon, AVSM moved to its current location.
In order to reach its goals, to raise the public awareness and promote the development of volunteer work, AVSM has organized a wide range of activities and training courses. Some of the themes include introduction to volunteering, volunteering leadership, service skills, communication skills, event design, volunteer management, instructor training, interpersonal relationships, team spirit, speaking skills for MCs, International Day of Volunteers, and the Outstanding Volunteers Award.
Besides, AVSM has held a number of events so as to boost cooperation among volunteers of different organizations and different regions. Those events include IAVE Asian-Pacific Regional Volunteer Conference, Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macau Volunteers Exchange Camps, volunteer family planning, volunteer recruitment program, Volunteer Fun Day, fairs, exhibitions, special volunteer group, and visits to social service organizations in Macau, Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and foreign countries.
Moreover, to improve the flow of information about volunteer work, AVSM launched its bimonthly magazine《蜂之訊》in October 1992.
Thanks to the efforts of its members and volunteers, AVSM has earned the appreciation and support of the government and people from all walks of life. AVSM pledges to keep up its hard work; and through organizing more activities, and in cooperation with different associations, AVSM strives to contribute more to the community in the future.
Our Mission
To unite volunteers and propel the development of volunteer service in Macao!
